A useful AI search report should answer four questions: Where was the client’s site visible? Which pages were surfaced? Did that visibility create visits or conversions? What can and cannot be measured reliably?

Avoid turning “AI visibility” into a single proprietary score with no transparent methodology. In 2026, the major platforms expose different signals, so agency reporting should keep the sources separate and explain their limitations.

AxiomLift’s white label AI SEO, AEO and GEO service covers AI-search-related delivery. This guide focuses on measurement and client communication.

Build the report in layers

Use four layers instead of one blended number:

  1. Google generative search visibility
  2. Bing AI citations
  3. ChatGPT referral traffic
  4. Business outcomes and assisted behavior

A fifth optional layer can be controlled prompt sampling, as long as you explain that it is a sample rather than a complete market measurement.

1. Google generative AI visibility

Google introduced dedicated generative AI performance reporting in Search Console in 2026. The reporting shows visibility signals for generative AI features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode, including dimensions such as impressions, pages, countries, devices, and dates where available.

Use the report to answer:

  • Which URLs appeared?
  • Is visibility increasing or decreasing over the comparison period?
  • Which countries or device types matter to the client’s market?
  • Which content categories are being surfaced?

Do not report an impression as a click or a citation as a conversion.

Keep the generative view connected to the client’s broader Search Console performance so the client can see whether AI visibility is complementing or replacing other search exposure.

2. Bing AI Performance

Bing Webmaster Tools introduced AI Performance reporting that can show how a site’s content is used in supported AI experiences.

Useful dimensions can include:

  • citations
  • cited URLs
  • citation trend
  • grounding queries or related query information where available

This gives agencies a platform-native view rather than relying entirely on external monitoring tools.

Report both volume and concentration. If one article receives most citations, that tells a different story from broad visibility across many service and resource pages.

3. ChatGPT referral traffic

OpenAI states that ChatGPT search referral URLs automatically include utm_source=chatgpt.com. That gives publishers a practical way to identify referral sessions in analytics platforms.

Track:

  • sessions/users from utm_source=chatgpt.com
  • landing pages
  • engagement or qualified-session indicators your analytics setup supports
  • conversions or lead actions
  • assisted journeys to commercial pages

Referral traffic is not the same as total ChatGPT visibility. A user may see a citation without clicking. Report it as referral traffic, not “all ChatGPT impressions.”

4. Connect visibility to commercial behavior

For an agency client, the report should eventually answer whether AI-assisted discovery contributes to business outcomes.

Depending on the site, track:

  • contact submissions
  • booked calls
  • quote requests
  • purchases
  • qualified lead events
  • visits from an informational article to a service page

Use normal attribution caution. A user can encounter the brand in more than one channel before converting.

Optional: controlled prompt sampling

Some agencies manually test agreed prompt sets or use third-party tools to monitor citations.

If you do this, document:

  • prompt list
  • market/location assumptions
  • model/product tested
  • logged-in versus logged-out state where relevant
  • date/time
  • number of repetitions if used
  • what counts as a citation or mention

AI outputs can vary. A 20-prompt sample is a sample, not a universal visibility percentage.

Report pages, not only brands

Page-level reporting creates actions.

For each high-value cited or surfaced URL, note:

  • page purpose
  • topic cluster
  • current AI visibility source
  • traditional search visibility
  • referral/conversion behavior
  • whether the page supports a commercial service
  • next content or technical action

This helps the client see why a page matters instead of treating “AI citations” as an abstract brand metric.

A monthly client report structure

Executive summary

Keep this short:

  • meaningful visibility changes
  • pages gaining or losing exposure
  • referral/conversion changes
  • important limitations
  • next priorities

Google AI visibility

Show trend, top pages, and relevant dimensions.

Bing AI citations

Show citation trend, cited URLs, and query themes where available.

ChatGPT referrals

Show sessions, landing pages, and outcomes from identifiable referral traffic.

Content assists

Show whether informational pages lead users to commercial pages or conversion paths.

Actions completed

Explain the work: technical fixes, content improvements, new resources, internal links, source updates, or measurement changes.

Next decisions

List what needs client approval or further testing.

Avoid these reporting mistakes

One opaque “AI visibility score”

If the client cannot understand how it is calculated, it is difficult to use for decisions.

Mixing mentions, citations, impressions, and clicks

They are not interchangeable.

Claiming complete ChatGPT visibility from referral sessions

Referral data only shows clicks that reach the site with identifiable attribution.

Ignoring normal SEO

AI reporting should not replace indexing, query, landing-page, and conversion analysis. The AI SEO vs traditional SEO guide explains why the foundations remain connected.

Reporting without a date and methodology

AI products and reporting features change quickly. Every report should identify the period, source, and method.

A practical metric dictionary

MetricWhat it meansWhat it does not mean
Google generative AI impressionURL appeared in supported generative feature reportingA click or conversion
Bing AI citationContent cited in a supported Bing AI experienceGuaranteed referral traffic
ChatGPT referral sessionUser clicked through to site with identifiable ChatGPT referral attributionTotal ChatGPT visibility
Prompt-sample citation rateFrequency in your defined test setMarket-wide share of voice
Assisted service-page visitResource reader later reaches commercial page in measured journeyProven causal credit by itself

The reporting principle

Report what the platforms actually expose, keep each signal’s meaning intact, and tie visibility back to pages and business actions.

AI search is a new measurement layer—not permission to replace transparent analytics with a proprietary score.
